Meet Our Governor, Dr. Joyce Ambray!

Meet Our Governor

by Majella Villaroman, Editor-in-Chief, Governor’s Digest; Senior Deputy Governor for Publications

It is with great interest for the readers of our Governor’s Digest to learn more about our District Governor Joyce Ambray. She has captured the minds and hearts of many when she speaks at gatherings and events. She captivates our imagination to take action as Rotarians and yet leaves many longing to really get to know more about her life. Inspired by this, our Governor’s Digest features a lifestyle interview with Governor Joyce Ambray.
I catch District Governor Joyce Ambray for this interview, returning home after a long day of webinars and meetings. First thing that Governor Joyce says is, “please give me a minute to say hello to Hermie”. Then, with ease, speaking as sisters do, we reflect back on her life journey.

Q: What did you want to be when you were a child?

A: At first I thought I wanted to be a nun because I went to an Italian catholic school when I was a young girl. But growing up and enjoying declamation in school, I shifted my interest to choose as my profession to be a newscaster.

I asked my Dad if this would be a good profession for me, and he says no! He advised me to re-evaluate my choice since during those times; the Philippine politics was in turmoil. He advised me not bring myself to places where it won’t be comfortable to be a woman. He also gave me sound advice that later, I would want to have a family and my work should be where I will have the time to bring up a child and take to work.

So, I asked, “Daddy, should I take up ophthalmology, optometry or dentistry?” and he says, “Take up dentistry because there are more teeth than eyes!”

My dad inspired me at a very early age on values based on hardwork and commitment. He reminded me “Bawal mainggit!” (in English, Do not be jealous!)”

I love my profession. Not only does it bless me with financial rewards, self worth and self confidence, beyond my expectations, mentoring colleagues became a joy and is instrumental in my life journey.

So, my lesson learned is to listen to parents for they only mean well for you!”

Q: In moments of self doubt or adversity, how do you build yourself back up?

A: My mom gave me strength and faith in believing that there is no mountain high enough and that we can see miracles through trials. Faith is nothing without prayers. This is a big factor in building myself up when things are hard.

I grew up secured because of the love of my parents and siblings. Now, I also receive the support and love from Hermie. Instead of leaving me alone when I feel troubled, he gives me a tight hug. He is my rock, giving me solutions and saving me from worst things that can happen to me. Also, as I am a strong and an independent woman, the greatest thing that Hermie has help me understand is the true sense of “submission”. This comes with great love. As for my son, Elijah, he is my pride and joy. Because he is not demanding, he is intelligent and a loving son. True to his name, Elihah Jirah, he reminds me that it is, “God who provides.”

With the love and support I receive from people around me, -from my parents, family, my son Elijah Jirah, Hermie and friends, it lifts me up when in doubt or times of adversity.

Q: Greatest success or proudest moment in your field of work

A: More than being considered as a Global Leader and a consistent Invisalyn awardee globally, what gives me great pride and joy is that I was able to connect with my colleagues not just professionally but also personally. Many have asked me to be the Godmother of their children. I also appreciate the trust given to me. It truly means a lot.

Q: Personal or professional motto

A: My favorite motto applies to both my personal and professional life, and this is from Queen Elizabeth’s speech on her 21st birthday, “To accomplish that we must give nothing less than the whole of ourselves.” This inspires me that when I accept a position, I give a 100% of my love, time and effort. It is a commitment.

Q: A woman, past or present, whom you admire

A: Mother Mary is the first woman who I think of because she has shown great submission and trust without questioning. This is very hard to do and to achieve. I continue to strive to build this in myself, to learn the true meaning of trust and obedience. Then, my mom comes to mind because of her faith, love, loyalty to my father and giving of herself to our family.

Q: First thing you do every morning to start your day on the right foot

A: I start my day reflecting on the verse I read from my prayer book. This gives me inspiration to start my day. I have a prayer book in both Filipino and English versions but I truly feel the essence when I read the prayer in Filipino.

Let me share an excerpt from my morning prayer in Filipino:

“Turuan Mo Ako Jesus”

This starts my day, then my self care rituals like personal hygene and a good healthy breakfast.

Q: Favorite thing to come home to after a long day of work

A: I look forward to sharing a great dinner conversation with Hermie, then having my daily relaxing massage and spending time with Elijah, my only son and our puppies, Snow and Crystal

As we end our interview, we both shared the warmest feelings of gratitude and how much joy it gave us to be able to share Governor Joyce’s journey with us all.
Top of mind, I heard and felt her love and passion for life. It is about what Governor Joyce values most: Faith, Prayers, Family, Hardwork, Commitment, Loyalty, Listening, Respect, Authentic friendships but most of all, the Joy of Sharing. All wrapped up simply about Love. Till next month’s lifestyle interview, with our Governor Joyce Ambray!
