RC Manila Project Updates

Good news!

The Global Grant Rotary Vision Care Project has completed its mission of providing eyeglasses to over 2,500 students, teachers, and non-teaching personnel in 15 schools in the School Division of Manila. Yesterday, April 26, 2023, marked the last day of the initiative, and it is heartening to know that so many people have benefited from this project.

I want to express my gratitude to the Global Grant Committee, headed by Chair STAR Rtn. Aries Balanay, for their effort in making this project a success.

The project’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of Global Grant Project in addressing societal challenges. The Rotary Club of Manila, Rotary Club of Kowloon East, Rotary Club of Singapore, the Department of Education, and Physicians for Peace came together to provide the necessary resources, funding, and expertise to ensure that the project’s objectives were achieved.

This initiative has had a significant impact. Providing eyeglasses has improved the students’ academic performance, boosted the teachers’ morale and productivity, and enabled non-teaching personnel to carry out their duties effectively. By addressing the issue of visual acuity, the project has helped to make the learning environment more equitable, giving all students an equal chance at success.

The Rotary Club of Manila Vision Care project is a shining example of what can be achieved when different organizations come together for a common cause. It is heartwarming to know that so many people have benefited from this initiative, and we can only hope that more organizations will take inspiration from this project and work towards improving their communities.

Another good news!

We also received some positive updates about our RCM Library Digitization Project.

I would like to thank RCM Library Digitization Committee headed by Chair Rtn. Inov Talusan, Co-Chair Rtn. Rami Chahwan and Member STAR Rtn. Aries Balanay, who are all working hard to make this project possible.

The Committee has divided the project into three main parts, and I’m happy to inform you that we are making great progress on all of them.

First, we have cataloging, which involves organizing and categorizing our vast collection of documents and memorabilia. We have reached 75% completion of this crucial step. Though it’s a huge task, we are confident about achieving our goals as planned.

Next is the software. We have achieved an impressive 90% completion rate. There are just a few minor issues left that we need to address, particularly some fixes for the reader. As soon as these are addressed, we can proceed at full speed.

Finally, we have scanning. This is where we digitize our collection, making it accessible to a global audience. We have completed 60% of our print materials and 80% of our non-print materials. We are steadily working on the remainder of the scanning process.

I am just as excited as the Digitization Committee about the progress of this project. We have an excellent team and I am confident that we will deliver something amazing.

According to Chair Rtn. Inov, we are eagerly anticipating the recommendations of our esteemed cataloging team, set to arrive at the end of this month. We want to ensure that our cherished memorabilia, documents, and photos are treated with the utmost care and preserved to the highest standards.

To achieve our goal, we require more help. Chair Rtn. Inov proposed that we contact someone from the National Museum who can offer their expertise and assist us in this important endeavor. With their assistance, we can guarantee the preservation of our historical treasures for future generations.

With regard to our flagship project, the Pasig River Clean-up and Rehabilitation Project—wherein we will purchase an aquatic trash skimmer vessel—we already submitted the Global Grant application and we are just waiting for approval from the Rotary Foundation.

63rd Charter Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Quezon City

Monday, 24 April 2023

Outside of RC Manila projects and activities, I attended the 63rd Charter Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Quezon City, which is the 17th daughter club of the Rotary Club of Manila, chartered in 1960. The event took place on April 24, 2023, at the Kalayaan Hall, Club Filipino in San Juan.

PDG Obet Pagdanganan, Dir. Albert Alday, Asst. Treas. PJ Garcia, Grant Chairman Aries Balanay, Digitization Chairman Rtn. Inov Talusan and STAR Rtn. Paul Kohn attended the event with me.

RC Quezon City Pres. Emman Timbol emphasized that this charter anniversary event is especially historical, as the membership and guests in attendance witnessed the ceremonial formal presentation of the original Charter document issued in 1960, which was then sent directly to the Rotary Club of Quezon City by Rotary International and not through the Rotary Club of Manila (the chartering/mother Club).Screenshot 2023 04 27 at 8.59.21 PM

I then presented to the Rotary Club of Quezon City a token of appreciation in the form of Gavel & Bell, symbolizing the authority invested on President Timbol.

Additionally, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Manila, I presented a cash donation to support the projects of the Rotary Club of Quezon City.

We also had the Rotary tradition of exchanging of club bannerettes, which capped the festive charter anniversary event.
